Coachella is a two-week music festival held in Indo, California. This event was created by Paul Tollett and started October 9, 1999. The hosts invite famous singers like Jack Harlow, Doja Cat, Lizzo and others. The daily entrance price to Coachella can range between $600 to over $1,000 depending on the pass purchased. Since Covid hit in 2019, Coachella has been on pause making 2022 the first Coachella in two years with an estimated 750,000 people attending this year.
This festival is very popular among the youth because of influencers. Lots of famous singers, Instagram models, YouTubers and influencers can be spotted during Coachella which attracts people from all over the world. There are also several different private parties during the day that are hosted by big brands. Furthermore, clothing is big to the “Coachella look” and is a key factor in attracting visitors. Many can see their favorite influencers in branded personalized outfits as well as hair and makeup professionally done. Although Coachella may seem like a fun event it can be dangerous due to weather and an increase in Covid cases.
This year’s Coachella was expected to be entertaining and one of the best after having a break for two years, however, it was chaotic. According to ABC news, “In accordance with local guidelines, there will be no vaccination, testing or masking requirements at Coachella 2022”. Although the amount of Covid cases have decreased, Coachella is a large event with thousands of people meaning Covid risks and cases can increase dramatically for the state of California. Everyone who attended this year’s festival was at their own risk of Covid.
Then there is the weather which can be uncomfortable. This festival is hosted in the middle of a desert during spring in California meaning the weather during the day reaches up to 80-90 degrees Fahrenheit and as low as the 50’s during the night. This is an issue because when most people go to this festival, they wear clothes to keep them cool, like a swimsuit, however, at night, when it reaches the 50’s, many people freeze.
Another concern is the location. In order to enter the festival, many influencers walk miles to the entrance on a dirt path. “Influencers complained that the transportation was disorganized and ill-equipped for large crowds. Some said they waited for hours under the hot sun with no food or water,” says NEWS. Most people visiting the area for this event don’t have cars and rely on public transportation to private parties and to the actual festival; however, this year was known to be a disaster and unorganized. People who attend complain about the services and how far the actual event is from the entrance. The shuttles and taxis that take people to Coachella drop off at an entrance that is a few miles by foot in order to reach the actual event.
Overall, Coachella can be a fun experience for those who plan accordingly while for others, it could be chaotic and not worth it.
