Is “Spider-Man: No Way Home” An Origin Story?

After the great success of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” fans are discussing the possibility of this being the actual origin story of the beloved superhero.

The long-awaited movie “Spider-Man: No Way Home” premiered on December 17, 2021, in the United States. So far, the film has been a great success, crossing the $1 billion mark at the international office and becoming Sony’s highest-grossing movie ever in the U.S. in less than ten days.

Even though it is the third and last movie from the Spider-Man trilogy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans are theorizing that the film actually tells the origin story of the arachnid superhero. The reason behind this possibility has to do with some details and events that Peter Parker goes through throughout the whole movie.

For the first time in the three movies, it is mentioned that Peter was bitten by a radioactive spider, granting him his powers. Even though this could already be inferred due to belonging to the superhero’s origin in the comics, being confirmed by the film is an important detail that foreshadows the unexpected story he will go through in the movie, leading up to his origin.

Another key moment from Spider-Man’s roots has to do with the famous phrase seen in the comics “With great power, there must also come great responsibility,” said by his Uncle Ben in his last moment of agony. However, this phrase is now stated by Aunt May as a message to Peter before passing away. The well-known line and the death of one of his beloved uncles are what trigger both Peter Parker and Spider-Man to always look for the good of others, since they have the ability to do so.

The last important event from this movie is the current state of Peter Parker. After the spell cast by Doctor Strange, he sacrificed his identity on the planet, leaving him alone and broke. He was forced to move to a mediocre apartment, working as an anonymous superhero with a homemade suit. Even if the movie ends with a sad note, this is the actual life of the young Peter Parker. However, fans are satisfied with this conclusion, because it fits perfectly with the origin story of Spider-Man.

Jon Watts, the director of all three Spider-Man movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, addressed these theories. In an interview with the newspaper Variety, he commented, “… ‘No Way Home’ is about trying to finish this origin story and the responsibility that comes with this. Peter Parker and Spider-Man mean so much to people and I felt that responsibility.”

From “Spider-Man: Homecoming” and “Spider-Man: Far From Home” to “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” the beloved superhero has gone through a major journey. However, it is now certain that this trilogy is actually Peter Parker’s origin story. With rumors about the development of another Spider-Man trilogy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the audience will keep watching the arachnid superhero on the big screen, now as the hero everyone knows and loves.
